Day 1: Cusco to Pona Lodge – Cloud Forest & Cock-of-the-Rock Spectacle

Day Itinerary:
Your Manu adventure begins with an early 5:00 AM pickup from your Cusco hotel. Our private transport will guide you through the majestic Andean mountains. We'll make a brief stop at Huancarani to explore the Ninamarca funeral towers, a fascinating Lupaca Pre-Inca cemetery. Continue to Paucartambo, Cusco's renowned folkloric capital, before reaching the entrance of Manu National Park at midday. Traverse the mystical Cloud Forest, where we'll witness the spectacular Cock-of-the-Rock (Peruvian National Bird) lek, a vibrant display of sound and color. Arrive at the charming Pona Lodge around 5:00 PM for your first night in the Peruvian Amazon.

Day 2: Pona Lodge to Tapir Clay Lick – Hummingbirds & Hot Springs

Day Itinerary:
After breakfast, our Manu tour continues by bus through the high forest to Atalaya, located on the Madre de Dios River (700m / 2,296ft). Enjoy a relaxing break at the Manu Hot Springs before lunch. In the afternoon, we'll reach our lodge and head to the Tapir Clay Lick, where we will spend the night immersed in the jungle. This morning also includes a visit to a specialized Hummingbird Garden, home to over 14 species of hummingbirds, along with other bird species and monkeys, offering incredible birdwatchingopportunities.

Day 3: Tapir Clay Lick to Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Reserved Zone & Jaguar Quest

Day Itinerary:
Today, our Manu Reserved Zone tour truly begins as we transition from the Alto Madre de Dios River to the clay-laden Manu River. After presenting permits at the Limonal park ranger station, we journey upstream for approximately five hours. River beaches abound with nesting birds, herons, egrets, Orinoco geese, terns, and skimmers. Keep an eye out for White and Black Caimans basking in the sun and side-necked turtles. Hundreds of sand-colored nightjars roost on logs. This stretch offers an excellent chance of encountering a sunning Jaguar, the world’s third-largest cat. We'll also spot primate species like Red Howler Monkeys and Squirrel Monkeys. After a riverside lunch, we arrive at our Safari Camp near Cocha Salvador lake. The afternoon is dedicated to exploring trails through the pristine rainforest. A visit to Cocha Otorongo is planned, where observation piers and a 20-meter tower provide excellent wildlife viewing opportunities, including a large family of Giant Otters. An optional night walk unveils nocturnal creatures like Olingos, Kinkajous, or even Ocelots. The sounds of tree frogs and insects will immerse you in the jungle's magic. Spend the night at the Casa Matsiguenka Lodge, equipped with flush toilets and showers.

Day 4: Reserved Zone of Manu National Park – Full Day Exploration

Day Itinerary:
Today is dedicated to a full Reserved Zone Manu adventure. We begin with a 3-4 hour walk from the Manu River to Otorongo Lake, where we'll ascend a 15-meter observation tower. From this vantage point, observe primitive Shansho (Hoatzin) birds, monkeys feeding on fruits, vibrant flowers, and colorful butterflies. Return to camp by canoe for a delicious lunch. The afternoon is spent exploring Salvador Oxbow Lake by catamaran, observing its mega-diversity, including Black Caiman, White Caiman, Giant Otter families, and various waterfowl. Another night walk will offer further opportunities for nocturnal wildlife encounters.

Day 5: Macaw Clay Lick & Reserved Zone – Avian Spectacle

Experience the incredible Macaw Clay Lick today within the Manu Reserved Zone. Here, large Red and Green Macaws as well as Scarlet Macaws are regular visitors, creating a spectacular display of color and sound. Continue with more jungle exploration and another exciting night walk to cap off your day in the Amazon rainforest.

Day 6: Reserved Zone to Papaya Lodge – Caimans, Turtles & Tapirs

• Turtle searching: Look for various Amazonian turtle species.

Day Itinerary:
Begin your day with an early morning nature walk or one final visit to an oxbow lake, listening to the chorus of birds marking their territory. As the sun rises, observe falcons and other predatory birds patiently hunting from the treetops. After lunch, we board our boat and travel downstream towards Boca Manu, then upstream to our lodge for the night. This afternoon features a visit to a Mammal Clay Lick, where we will spend the night in a platform blind, hoping to observe tapirs and other nocturnal jungle mammals.

Day 7: Papaya Lodge to Pona Lodge – Birdwatching & Amazonian Scenery

Today, after breakfast, we sail up the Alto Madre de Dios River to the port of Atalaya, marking the end of our boat journey. From Atalaya, we drive to Pona Lodge (formerly Bamboo Lodge), where we will spend our final night within the Manu National Park area, reflecting on the amazing wildlife and experiences of the past week. Enjoy more birdwatching and an optional visit to the hot springs.

Day 8: Pona Lodge to Cusco – Farewell to Manu
