Day 1: Cusco - Pona Lodge: The Descent from the Andes to the Cloud Forest

Our journey begins at 6:00 AM with a private drive from Cusco. We quickly leave the city behind to reach the Huacarpay Lagoon, a high-altitude wetland teeming with Andean birdlife. We then visit the Funeral Towers of Ninamarca, a hauntingly beautiful Pre-Inca cemetery of the Lupaca culture.

After a brief stop in Paucartambo, the folkloric capital of the region, we reach the gateway to Manu National Park. As we descend through the mystical Cloud Forest, the air turns humid and the vegetation lush. We will visit the lek of the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird, to witness their vibrant social displays and unique calls.

Day 2: Pona Lodge - Yanayacu Lodge: Into the Amazon Basin & Thermal Waters

An early 3:30 AM start takes us to the Atalaya Port. En route, we stop at a specialized Hummingbird Garden, where these "flying jewels" zip through the air alongside King Vultures and Titi monkeys.

At Atalaya, we trade our van for a motorized canoe to navigate the clear waters of the Alto Madre de Dios River. To rejuvenate after our early start, we will stop at natural Hot Springs for a relaxing soak surrounded by the sights and sounds of the jungle.

Day 3: Yanayacu Lodge - Parrot Clay Lick - Reserved Zone: Entering the Reserved Zone – The Kingdom of the Jaguar

Today we enter the strictly protected Reserved Zone of Manu. We start at a Parrot Clay Lick, watching hundreds of parrots and macaws feed on mineral-rich clay. We then transition from the clear Alto Madre de Dios to the sediment-rich, coffee-colored Manu River.

As we travel upstream into the heart of the park, keep your binoculars ready. The riverbanks are prime territory for Jaguars, Black Caimans, and Giant River Turtles. We will check in at the Limonal Ranger Station before heading to the Cocha Otorongo oxbow lake, where we’ll climb a 20-meter observation tower for a bird's-eye view of the canopy.

Day 4: Reserved Zone all day: Giant Otters of Cocha Salvador & Macaw Spectacle

We spend the morning on a catamaran at Cocha Salvador, the largest oxbow lake in the park. This is the best place to observe a resident family of Giant River Otters.

Later, we hike to a nearby Macaw Clay Lick. Watching Scarlet and Red-and-Green Macaws descend in a chaotic rainbow of color is one of the world's greatest wildlife spectacles. In the afternoon, we explore primary forest trails to learn about medicinal plants and search for the rare Emperor Tamarin monkey.

• Activity: Optional night walk to find Ocelots, Night Monkeys, and various amphibians.

Day 5: Reserved Zone - Tapir Clay Lick/Yanayacu Lodge: Downstream Navigation & The Tapir Blind

We bid farewell to the Reserved Zone, navigating downstream back toward the Biosphere Reserve. This is our final "Jaguar Patrol" as we scan the beaches of the Manu River.

After reaching the Tapir Clay Lick area, we will hike to a specially designed "Blind" (camouflaged hideout). This platform is located directly in front of a mineral lick favored by the South American Tapir, the largest land mammal in the Amazon. We will spend the night here in a unique "jungle sleepover" to witness these nocturnal giants in their natural habitat.

• Highlight: A second chance for Jaguar sightings; an overnight stay in a camouflage blind to see the elusive Tapir.

Day 6: Tapir Clay Lick - Pona Lodge: The Return Journey

Emerging from the deep jungle, we navigate upstream back to Atalaya Port. Along the way, we’ll have a final chance to spot Capybaras and diverse bird species. Upon arrival at the port, our private transport will be waiting to take us back up the mountains to Pona Lodge, where we can enjoy a final dinner and a comfortable bed.

Day 7: Ponal Lodge - Cusco - Cloud Forest to the Andes

On our final day, we wind our way back up through the Cloud Forest, offering one last look at the breathtaking Amazonian vista from the "Tres Cruces" area (weather permitting). We will arrive back in Cusco at approximately 3:00 PM, dropping you off directly at your hotel.
